In colder climates, water level of a lake or reservoir is kept at the highest level possible until the water freezes. Once the water freezes, the water level is lowered, which causes the ice to sag. This reduces damage to structures and embankment caused by the crushing ice pressure. The water depth of a lake determines its classification. 1. First Order, >200' 2. Second Order, 25 to 200' 3. Third Order, <25' Lakes classified as the 2nd Order are more often used as a water treatment source. The deeper the water, the more stagnant the water becomes when there is surface freezing. A lack of oxygen supply may cause sulfate to convert to sulfide. This will cause taste and odor problems that are difficult to remove. Reaeration of reservoirs is a critical process where freezing temperatures prevail.
