1

Adenosine

Drug Interactions:

  • Methylxanthines (theophylline-like drugs) antagonize the effects.
  • Dipyridamole (Persantine) potentiates the effects.
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol) may potentate the AV Node blocking effects.

2

Amiodarone (Cordarone)

Drug Interactions:

  • Incompatible with Sodium Bicarbonate: will precipitate.

3

Aspirin (ASA)

Drug Interactions:

Use with caution in patients allergic to NSAIDS.

  • Ibuprofen
  • Ketoprofen
  • Flurbiprofen
  • Tolmetin
  • Naproxen
  • Ketorolac (Toradol)

4

Atropine sulfate

Drug Interactions:
Effects enhanced by

  • Antihistamines
  • Antipsychotics
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antidepressants

5

Calcium chloride

Drug Interactions:

  • Sodium Bicarbonate: Do not mix in running IV, flush prior to administration in same IV line.
  • Digitalis: May worsen dysrhythmias in patients on Digitalis.
  • Verapamil: May antagonize effects of Verapamil.

6

Diltiazem (Cardizem)

Drug Interactions:

  • Caution in patients using medications that affect cardiac contractility.
  • In general, should not be used in patients on Beta-blockers.

7

Dopamine (Intropin)

Drug Interactions:

  • Incompatible in alkaline solutions.
  • Beta blockers may antagonize effects.

8

Epinephrine

Drug Interactions:

  • Potentates other sympathomimetics.
  • Deactivated by alkaline solutions.
  • MAOIs may potentate effects of epinephrine.

9

Fentanyl citrate (Sublimaze)

Drug Interactions:

Many Rx interactions use with caution in conjunction with other opioid, narcotic, or CNS depressant medications.

10

Furosemide (Lasix)

Drug Interactions:

  • Lithium toxicity may be potentiated by sodium depletion.
  • Digitalis toxicity may be potentiated by potassium depletion.

11

Lidocaine (Xylocaine)

Drug Interactions:

  • Apnea induced with succinylcholine may be prolonged with high doses.
  • Cardiac depression may occur in conjunction with IV Dilantin.
  • Metabolic clearance decreased in patients with liver disease or those patients' taking beta-blockers.

12

Magnesium sulfate

Drug Interactions:

  • May enhance effects of other CNS depressants.
  • Serious changes in overall cardiac function may occur with cardiac glycosides.

13

Metoprolol (Lopressor/Toprol XL)

Drug Interactions:

  • Drugs which slow AV conduction ( digoxin): effects may be additive with beta-blockers.
  • Glucagon: Metoprolol may blunt the hyperglycemic action of glucagon.
  • Verapamil or diltiazem may have synergistic or additive pharmacological effects when taken concurrently with beta-blockers; avoid concurrent I.V. use.

14

Morphine sulfate

Drug Interactions:

  • CNS depressant may potentate effects.

15

Nitroglycerin (Nitrolingual/NitroQuick/Nitro-Dur)

Drug Interactions:

  • Additive effects with other vasodilators.

16

Norepinephrine

Drug Interactions:

  • Can be deactivated by alkaline solutions.
  • Sympathomimetic and phosphodiesterase inhibitors may exacerbate dysrhythmias.

17

Oxygen

None.

18

Sodium Bicarbonate

Drug Interactions:

  • May precipitate in calcium solutions.
  • Vasopressors may be deactivated.
