1

Anatomy

the study of the internal and external structures of plants, animals, or the human body

2

Microscopic Anatomy

the study of structures that can be seen and examined only with magnification aids, such as a microscope

Examples: Study of cellular structures and tissue samples

3

Macroscopic Anatomy

the study of the structures invisible to the naked eye

Example: viewing an x-ray

4

Physiology

Focuses on the functions and processes of the various structures

5

Disease

condition in which the body fails to function normally

6

Signs

more definitive (objective) measurable, obvious indicators of an illness

7

Vital Signs

common, measurable indicators that help asses the health of our patients

8

Normal Heart Rate for an adult

60-100 BPM

9

Normal Heart Rate for a child

70-120 BPM

10

Normal Heart Rate for a Newborn

90-170 BPM

11

Symptoms

subjective, based on the individuals perception and therefor more difficult to measure

12

Diagnosis

an identification of a disease determined by studying the patients signs, symptoms, history, and results of diagnostic tests

13

Chief Complaint/concern (CC)

what brought the patient in to seek medical help

14

etiology

cause of the disease

15

Chronic Condition

Anything lasting longer than 6 months

16

Acute conditions

rapid onset of signs and symptoms

17

Remission

when the signs and symptoms of a chronic disease disappear

18

Relapses

recurrences of the signs and symptoms of disease

19

exacerbation

if the signs and symptoms acutely flare up

20

Mortality

the measure of the number of deaths attributed to specific disease in a given population over a period of time

21

Morbidity

the measure of the disabilities and extent of problems caused by a disease

22

Endemic

if a disease is continually present within a specific population or region

23

Epidemic

disease occurs suddenly in large numbers over a specific region

24

Pandemic

the disease spreads country or worldwide

25

Prognosis

prediction of the outcome of a disease

26

Homeostasis

the physiological process in which your body monitors and maintains a stable internal environment or equilibrium

27

Negative Feedback Loop

what makes adjustments to maintain homeostasis

28

Positive Feedback

increase the magnitude of a change
