Baptism
The first of the Seven Sacraments and one of the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation by which one becomes a member of the Church and a new creature in Christ
Eucharist
The sacrament in which bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It remembers Jesus’ Last Supper and unites believers more closely with Christ and with one another at every liturgical service
Confirmation
The sacrament in which a baptized person receives a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Reconciliation (Confession or Penance)
The sacrament in which sins committed after Baptism are forgiven through God’s Mercy. The person confesses sins to a priest, expresses sorrow, and receives absolution and grace to grow in holiness
Anointing of the Sick
The sacrament given to those who are seriously ill, elderly, or near death. It brings spiritual healing, strength, peace, and sometimes physical healing through God’s grace
Matrimony
a lifelong covenant, molded on that between Christ and the Church
Holy Orders
The Sacrament by which baptized men are ordained for permanent ministry in the church as bishops, priests, and deacons
Contemplative Prayer
sometimes defined as resting in God, truly wordless prayer that does not have a driving force
Adoration
The meditative act of worshiping God through the reverence of the Blessed Sacrament (Holy Communion) being present in a monstrance
Pope
- The Bishop of Rome, Head of the Roman Catholic Church, and highest authority, only below God
Cardinal
One who has received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and is a part of the congressional body that votes on the Pope
Archbishop
One who has the chief responsibilities of a bishop for an archdiocese
Bishop
One who has received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and is a successor to the Apostles
Pastor
A priest who takes a leadership role in the daily maintenance and functions of a given parish
Priest
One who has received the ministerial priesthood through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The priest serves the community of faith by representing and assisting the bishop in teaching, governing, and presiding over the community’s worship
Deacon
Ordained Minister who can not fulfill every task that a priest can, in favor of being able to be married
Oil of the Catechumens
Oil used for preparing for Baptism. It strengthens and blesses individuals as they prepare to turn away from sin and grow in faith
Sacred Chrism
A mixture of olive oil and perfume, it is used in Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, and special liturgies as a representation of Christ walking with the individuals and the mark of the Holy Spirit
Oil of the Sick
Used in the Anointing of the Sick to bring God’s healing, comfort, strength, and peace to those who are seriously ill, elderly, or suffering
Paschal Mystery
Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension.
