Danger signs during pregnancy

Measuring fundal height

  • Place the paper measuring tape at the pt's symphysis pubis using your dominant hand.

With your dominant hand, place the paper measuring tape at the client's symphysis pubis. Hold the other hand on the other end of the tape at the top of the fundus. Measure the distance from the symphysis pubis to the top of the fundus. The result in centimeters correlates with the gestational weeks of pregnancy plus or minus two gestational weeks **This result is not considered accurate before 18 to 20 weeks or after 31 to 32 weeks of gestation.

Nägele's rule

Take the first day of client's last menstrual cycle, subtract 3 months, and then add 7 days.

E.g. So, if the first day of the client's last menstruation was November 20 of current year, subtracting 3 months takes you to August, and adding 7 days and 1 year makes the due date August 27 of the next year.

Hyperemesis gravidarum

Severe nausea and vomiting that leads to weight loss, dehydration, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and nutritional deficits during pregnancy. It begins in early pregnancy and can persist throughout.
