How many days do you have to update the MVD if you change your address or name?

10 Days

To update address, do you need to go into the DMV

No. You can do it online or go to a 3rd party location. You must know your Driver's license number, date of birth, and last 4 digits of your social security.

Can you schedule the road test online?

Yes. AZMVDNow.gov

Do you need insurance to get your license.

Yes.

Minimum:

$25,000 Bodily Injury Liability/$50,000 for 2+ people.

$15,000 Property Damage Liability

What are the classes of Driver's Licenses

  • Class G - Graduated
  • Class D - Operator
  • Class M - Motorcycle
  • Class A, B, C - Commercial

Motorcycle permit

May not carry passengers, ride on freeways or interstate highways from sunset to sunrise. The permit is valid for 7 months and can be renewed 1 time within 24 months.

How long is the driving permit valid

One year - 12 months.

What is a Graduated License (Class G)

Issued to a driver who is 16-18 years old. Valid to operate any vehicle that doesn't require a motorcycle or commercial license.

What restrictions are placed on a permit driver?

May not drive between 12 midnights and 5am unless:

  • A parent with a license occupies the front passenger seat.
  • Driving directly to or from a sanctioned school-sponsored activity
  • Driving to employment
  • Driving to a sanctioned religious activity
  • Driving because of an family emergency

Graduated drives have what extra rules for the first 6 months?

Drive with more than one passenger under 18 unless:

  • They are a sibling
  • The driver has a parent with a license in the front passenger seat.

For a teen to get a license they must do the following

  • Have the permit for 6 months
  • Have a valid permit.
  • Complete a Drivers Ed program or have parents sign you have completed 30 hours of driving practice.
  • Must include 10 hours of night driving

OR

  • 20 hours of driving practic
  • 6 hours of night driving
  • Traffic school OR Defensive Driving School

What happens if you are conviced of a traffic violation as a teen?

First Conviction

  • Must attend Traffic Survival School
  • Violation goes on driving record

Second Conviction

  • 3-month suspension of driving privilege.
  • Violation goes on driving record.

Third Conviction

  • 6-month suspension of driving privilege
  • Violation goes on driving record

What other penalties can happen as a teen driving (besides a traffic violation)?

  • Curfew violation
  • passenger restrictions

Fines & mandatory extensions of 6-month restricted driving period

Suspension of driving privilege results after 3rd conviction of curfew/passenger violations or alcohol violations.

If under 18, do you have to have a parent's signature.

Yes. the signature must be witnessed by a MVD agent.

The parent can cancel the license.

Every male 18 years old must register for the Selective Service (Draft)

What is an Operator License (Class D)

Allows you to drive any vehicle that does NOT require a motorcycle or commercial license. You must be at least 18.

What is a Motorcycle License (Class M)

Must be at least 16 and complete a permit stage if under 18. Must complete a motorcycle drivers education program that is approved by the MVD OR parent's certify in writing that 30 hours of supervised driving practice occured.

What is a Commercial Driver License (Class A,B,C)

Class A: Any combination of vehicles with gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001+ pounds and towed vehicle 10,000 lbs.

Class B: Any single vehicle with gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001+ or vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 lbs.

Class C: Designed to transport 16 or more passengers and not a Class A or Class B. Can transport hazardous materials

Can you get an identification card instead of a drivers license?

Yes. They are $12 unless

What should you bring to the DMV

  1. Completed Application (AZMVDNOW.gov)
  2. Proof of residency
  3. Social Security Card or passport
  4. If under 18, parent to sign permission with the MVD witness.

AZ driver's license CAN include the Travel DL/ID to comply with federal regulations.

Travel ID requirements

One of the following

  • Valid unexpired US passport or passport card.
  • Original or certified copy of birth certificate
  • Consulate birth report abroad

Applying for title and registration

  • Must apply within 15 days of purchasing the vehicle.
  • Most vehicles can be registered for 1 or 2 years.
  • If the vehicle doesn't need emission testing, a 5 year registration option is available.
