1

What is the Altimeter?

A pressure sensor used to determine altitude.

2

What is atmospheric pressure?

The force per unit area exerted by the weight of the atmosphere.

3

What is a barometer?

A device used to measure the atmospheric pressure (without the use of fluids.)

4

What are the five different types of altitude?

1. Indicated Altitude: What you read on the altimeter.

2. Pressure Altitude: displayed when the altimeter is set to 29.92 in/mg, it is the vertical distance above the standard datum plane

3. Density Altitude: Pressure corrected for nonstandard temperature.

4. True Altitude: The actual height above mean sea level (msl)

5. Absolute Altitude: The actual height above the earth's surface.

5

What are the Atmospheric Pressure Units?

Millibars (mb or mbars) or hectopascals (hPa)

6

What is Station Pressure?

Pressure measured at an airport.

7

What is Pressure Variation?

The changes in atmospheric pressure with altitude and temperature of the air.

8

What effect does temperature have on pressure?

Air expands as it gets warmer, and contracts as it cools.

9

What is Density and the formula to find density?

The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume occupied by it. Density = Mass/Volume. (D=M/V)

10

What is Desposition?

Where gas changes to a solid.

11

What is Dewpoint?

The measure of atmospheric moisture, the temperature at which the air becomes saturated with water vapor.

12

What is Relative Humidity?

The amount of water vapor present in the air compound to the max. the air can hold at that temperature.

13

What is Lapse Rate?

The temperature change with altitude.

14

What is the difference between continential and maritime?

Continential=dry

Maritime=moist

15

What is convection wind?

Vertical wind.

16

What is advection wind?

Horizontal wind
