1
Aim
To investigate whether the automatic process of reading words (system 1) intervenes with naming a color (system 2)
2
Method
A lab experiment with repeated measures design
3
Procedures
- Participants were shown word lists which only included colors
- some of these lists were printed with congruent word and print color, while others were incongruent
- as fast as they could, participants were asked to say the color the words were printed in, regardless of what the actual word was
- time taken and number of errors were made
4
Results
When words and print color were incongruent, participants took more time and made more errors
5
Conclusion
When information was incongruent, system 1 interfered with system 2, causing a delay in response time... known as the stroop effect
When information was congruent, no decision is needed, so it goes faster... automatic processing
