Humanists

- people in the Renaissance who believed in observing the world around them rather than dedicating their whole life to a religion.

How did it start

- Petrarch and Boccaccio (humanists)

- translated ancient Roman and Greek texts-traveled on trade routes and went into ancient cities to find them

- their work inspired/dedicated other scholars in Italy and their ideas spread

Middle Ages influence on Renaissance

Muslim Empire: scientific and cultural advances - astronomy, geography, and architecture

- interacted without the Muslim empire when they traded

each city-state controlled their own trade and government

- traders and merchants took their knowledge back to Italy and spread to other

- invaders=saw Italian artwork and inspired them

- ideas spread to nations and other nations governments wanted to use the ideas of humanism

- printing press - spread information faster and more consistently through Europe and the rest of the world

- scholars - created their own type of humanism

- Renaissance ideas spread all over Europe
