Biomed Unit 1 Nervous System and Histology Flashcards

1.

nervous system

receives, interprets, and responds to signals from outside environment and internal body signals

2.

What is included in the nervous system?

brain, brain stem, spinal cord, nerves / sensory receptors

3.

central nervous system

interprets and sends out responses (brain sends signals through spinal cord to peripheral nervous system)

4.

brain

controls body in thoughts, emotions, behaviors, memories and involuntary movements

5.

frontal lobe

anterior; planning, organizing information, behavior emotions

6.

temporal lobe

on the sides; stores long-term memory, language

7.

parietal lobe

superior posterior; sensory and visual info

8.

occipital lobe

lower posterior; sensory info from the eyes

9.

spinal cord

pathway that connects the brain to the nerves

10.

peripheral nervous system

nerves that send out and receive signals to/from the central nervous system

11.

nerve signals

electrochemical signals that detect and respond to stimuli from the outside world, controls bodily functions

12.

concussion

head impact leads to traumatic brain injury

13.

What are the symptoms of concussion?

headache, dizzy, cognitive/memory deficits, light sensitivity, ears ring, emotional irregularity, nausea

14.

traumatic brain injury (TBI)

outside force to head leads to brain disfunction

15.

chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)

progressive degeneration/ death of nerve cells from repeated head injury

16.

histology

the study of the microscopic anatomy of tissues

17.

Who performs histology?

a medical examiner in the gross examination and a forensic histologist in the microscopic examination

18.

nervous tissue

nervous system; neurons transmit, interpret, and respond to signals

19.

types of muscle tissue

skeletal, smooth, cardiac

20.

skeletal muscle tissue

attaches bones

21.

smooth muscle tissue

organ lining

22.

cardiac muscle tissue

in heart

23.

epithelial tissue

makes up organ and blood vessel outer layers; sheets connected to absorb, secrete, protect, and sense

24.

connective tissue

connects other tissues like the muscles, bones, joints; keeps organs in place; helps tissues stretch
