Respiratory System Medical Terminology

1.

Airways

This term is used interchangeably with respiratory system. It refers to the network of organs, muscles, and tissues responsible for breathing.

Apnea

When the muscles in the throat relax and cause a blockage in the airways

Aspiration

Is when a foreign object or substance that is not meant to be swallowed enters the trachea

4.

Bronchitis

Is an infection that occurs in the bronchi

5.

Bronchospasm

Is when the muscles in the bronchi tighten and narrow

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder

Is a term used to define a cluster of conditions that cause severe breathing difficulties. (COPD)

7.

Cilia

Are small, hair-like projections in the lungs that push mucous and foreign partials up into the mouth

8.

Cyanosis

Refers to the blue and purple hue the skin takes on when there is reduced oxygen supply to the blood

9.

Diaphragm

Is the main muscle that supports the process of breathing

10.

Endoscopy

Is a test that looks inside the body with a camera

11.

Hyperventilation

Is the term for rapid breathing that creates an imbalance between the oxygen being inhaled and the oxygen being exhaled

12.

Hypoxia

Is when there is an insufficient oxygen in the tissues

13.

Intubation

Consists of inserting a tube into the nose or mouth and pushing it down the trachea.

Larynx

Is often referred to as the voice box

15.

Lungs

Are the primary organs in the respiratory system

16.

Nebulizer

Is a device that transforms liquid medicine into a fine mist

17.

Esophagus

Is the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach

18.

Phlegm

Is a mucus secreted by cells in the lower airways

19.

Pneumonia

Is inflammation of the lungs caused by an infection in the tiny air sacs in the lungs

Respiratory System

Refers to the muscles, organs, and tissues that are involved in breathing

21.

Saliva

Is a substance secreted by the salivary glands

22.

Secretions

Are the substances produced by the organs and glands in the body

23.

Sputum

Another word for phlegm

24.

Trachea

Is often referred to as a windpipe

25.

Tracheostomy

An artificial opening created at the front of the neck to support breathing
