antacids action

buffer hydrochloric acid to a lower concentration

weight reduction, smoking cessation, consume smaller meals, avoid eating at bedtime, avoid tight clothing over abdomen

aluminum salts

often recommended for patients with renal disease (more easily excreted)

calcium salts

may cause constipation, kidney stones

sodium biacarbonate

buffers the acidic properties of HCI

-may cause metabolic alkalosis

histamine-2 receptor antagonists

action: block h2 receptors resulting in decreased volume of acid secreted

h2 antagonists

use with caution in patients who are confused, disoriented, or older

take 1 or 2 hours before antacids

11.

misofrostol (cytotec)

use: prevents and treats gastric ulcers caused by NSAIDS (including aspirin)

12.

PPI'S

inhibit gastric secretion by inhibiting gastric acid pump of the parietal cells

- may increase chance of bleeding with warfarin

13.

metoclopramide (reglan)

reduces reflux, increases stomach contradictions, relaxes pyloric valve, increases peristalsis
