Physiotherapy terminology

1.

Mobility

The ability to move freely

2.

Weight-bearing status

The amount of weight that can safely be placed on a part of the body

Walking/mobility aid

A devices a patient may be issued in order to improve their walking pattern, balance or safety while mobilising independently

4.

Transfer aid

A device used to move a person from point to point for example wheelchair into bed or from a standing position into the car

5.

Resistance bands

Stretchable bands used for both physiotherapy and general fitness

6.

Home exercise program

An individualised set of therapeutic exercises a patient is given in physiotherapy to complete at home

7.

Manual therapy

Treatments that the physiotherapist delivers by hand, for example soft-tissue massage and joint mobilisation.

8.

Parallel bars

A set of two wooden or metal bars used in rehabilitation to assist in walking

9.

Balance

The ability to distribute your weight in a way that lets you stand or move without falling, or recover if you trip.

10.

Soft tissue

The muscles, ligaments and tendons surrounding the joints and bones
