-begins and ends at the heart

front 2

Systemic Circuit

back 2

-carries blood to and from the body
-begins and ends at the heart

front 3

Arteries/Efferent Vessels

back 3

-carry blood AWAY from the heart

front 4

Veins/Afferent Vessels

back 4

carry blood TO the heart

front 5

Capillaries/Exchange Vessels

back 5

-microscopic thin-walled vessels
-interconnect the smallest arteries and veins
- exchange materials between blood and tissues (b/c of thin walls)
-materials include dissolved gases, nutrients, and waste products

front 6

Each day the heart pumps about _____ liters of blood.

back 6

8000

front 7

The heart is about the size of a clenched _____.

back 7

fist

front 8

Four Chambers of the Heart

back 8

1.Right Atrium
2.Right Ventricle
3.Left Atrium
4.Left Ventricle

front 9

Right Atrium

back 9

-receives blood from the systemic circuit and then passes through right ventricle

front 10

Right Ventricle

back 10

-pumps blood to the pulmonary circuit

front 11

Left Atrium

back 11

-collects blood from the pulmonary circuit and empties it into the left ventricle

front 12

Left Ventricle

back 12

pumps blood to the systemic circuit

front 13

When the heart beats, first the _____ contract, and then the ______ contract.

back 13

Atria; Ventricles

front 14

The heart is located near the ________ chest wall, directly posterior to the ______.

back 14

anterior; sternum

front 15

Apex

back 15

inferior, pointed tip of the heart

front 16

Pericardial Sac/Fibrous Pericardium

back 16

-surrounds the heart
-consists of a dense network of collagen fibers
-stabilizes the the position of the heart

front 17

Pericardium

back 17

-double lining of the pericardial cavity
1)visceral pericardium (epicardium)
2)parietal pericardium

front 18

Pericardial Cavity

back 18

-the space between the visceral and parietal pericardium
-contains 15-50 mL of pericardial fluid

front 19

Pericardial Fluid

back 19

acts as a lubricant, reducing friction between the opposing surfaces as the heart beats

front 20

Coronary Sulcus

back 20

-a deep groove that marks the border between the atria and ventricles

front 21

Anterior Interventricular Sulcus and Posterior interventricular sulcus

back 21

shallow depressions that mark the boundary between the left and right ventricles

front 22

Epicardium

back 22

-covers the outer surface of the heart

front 23

Myocardium

back 23

-muscular wall of the heart
-consists of concentric layers of cardiac muscle tissue

front 24

Endocardium

back 24

-covers the inner surface of the heart
-simple squamous epithelium

front 25

Characteristics of Muscle Cells

back 25

-interconnected by intercalated discs
-small
-single nuclei
-branching interconnections between cells

front 26

Intercalated Discs

back 26

-transfer the force of contraction from cell to cell and propagate action potentials
