an extreme exaggeration

alliteration

the repetition of initial consonant sounds in words that are at the beginning of the words

personification

giving non-human things human qualities

pun

a saying that is a play on words (joke)

onomatopoeia

the process of making a word that uses the same sound it describes

consonance

use of repeated consonant sounds within a word (not the first letter)

assonance

use of repeated vowel sounds within words (loud owl shouts)

allusion

a reference to something popular (TV character, movie, book, etc.) to emphasize a point

line

a row of words in a poem

stanza

a "paragraph" of lines in a poem

enjambment

when a sentence is split across multiple lines in a poem

anaphora

repeated words/phrases at the beginning of multiple lines to make a point

meter

the rhythm of the syllables in a poem

rhyme scheme

pattern of rhyming words at the end of rows (uses ABCs to label)
