Science Chapter 10 terms + definitions + mitosis
Cell Division
the process of one cell dividing into two daughter cells
chromosome
a structure made of DNA and protein in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell
cell cycle
the period of time from the beginning of one cell division to the beginning of the next
interphase
the stage of the cell cycle that occurs between cell divisions
mitosis
the process of cell division where the nucleus divides into two nuclei
cytokinesis
the process where the cytoplasm and its organelles divide into two daughter cells
reproduction
the formation of new organisms of the same species
asexual reproduction
a type of reproduction that requires only one parent
sexual reproduction
a type of reproduction that involves special cells that involves special cells called sex cells
sex cells
special cells that contain half the numbers of chromosomes as body cells
meiosis
cell division that produces sex cells with half the number of chromosomes
diploid
a double set of chromosmes
haploid
a half set of chromosomes
fertilization
the union of sperm and egg
zygote
a fertilized egg
embryo
an organism in its earliest stage of development
cell differentiation
the process of cell specialization
prophase
chromosomes visible
Nuclear membrane and Nucleolus disappear
metaphase
chromosomes gravitate (move) to the middle (equator)
Formation of Spindle FIbers
Anaphase
chromosomes split, pulled to opposite sides
Telephase
Chromosomes are clustered (in a group) at each end
Nuclear membrane forms; cell membrane "pinches" begins to divide
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm divides, two daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
1st Stage of Mitosis
interface
2nd Stage of Mitosis
prophase
3rd Stage of Mitosis
metaphase
4th Stage of Mitosis
anaphase
5th Stage of Mitosis
telephase
6th Stage of Mitosis
