Map Skills Vocabulary

Title

Tells what the map is about.

Scale

Shows how distances on a map are related to actual distances.

Compass Rose

A symbol on a map showing direction. N,E,S,W

Key/legend

Shows what the symbols represent on a map.

Coordinate grid

Intersecting lines drawn on a map to pinpoint locations.

Cartographer

A person who makes maps.

Equator

The imaginary line of latitude around the center of the Earth. It divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.

8.

Prime Meridian

The imaginary line of longitude that runs N and S at 0°. It divides the Earth into the eastern and western hemispheres.

Absolute Location

The exact location.

Relative Location

About where it is.

Latitude

Lines that run E to W (horizontally) on a grid and are parallel to the equator. FAT

Lines that run N to S on a grid. Start and end at the N and S poles.
