Intro to Sound Mixing Lesson 1

1.

Define Amplitude, Waveform, and Frequency

"Amplitude is the maximum displacement from the resting position to the highest point (crest) or lowest point (trough) of a wave, indicating its energy. Frequency is the number of complete wave cycles that pass a fixed point per second, measured in Hertz (Hz), and determines the pitch of a sound or color of light. A waveform is the visual representation of a wave, showing how its amplitude or other properties change over time or position, allowing us to see its shape and characteristics."

2.

What unit of measure is used to indicate frequency?

Hertz (Hz)

3.

What unit of measure is used to indicate amplitude of sound?

dB

4.

What is the highest frequency that can generally be heard by a human?

20,000 Hz

5.

What does the Nyquist-Shannon Sampling theorem state?

"To perfectly reconstruct a continuous analog signal from its samples, the sampling rate must be at least twice the highest frequency component of the signal."

6.

What is the max dynamic range of 24 bit audio?

144 dB

7.

What versions support surround mixing?

"Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Adobe Audition, and DaVinci Resolve's Fairlight module."

8.

What is the windows modifier to the following Mac ones? Ctrl, Option, Command, Return

  • Ctrl (Mac) - This key is also called Ctrl (Control) on Windows.
  • Option (Mac) - This key is equivalent to the Alt key on Windows keyboards.
  • Command (Mac) - This key is equivalent to the Windows key (also known as the Start key) on Windows keyboards.
  • Return (Mac) - This key is equivalent to the Enter key on Windows keyboards
9.

What device should be turned on last?

Speakers

10.

What is the default shortcut to start or stop playback?

The Spacebar
