respiratory medications

1.

Albuterol

(Flovent, Ventolin) “SABA”- bronchodilator relaxing the muscles around the airways, making it easier to breathe. Side Effect: tachycardia

2.

Advair Diskus

(Fluticasone propionate/ Salmeterol): It can prevent symptoms of asthma and COPD. steroid( rinse mouth after to prevent thrush )

3.

Heparin

anticoagulant - used to prevent the risk of pulmonary embolism

4.

Montelukast

(singular): leukotriene modifier maintenance medication (not for acute asthma attack)

5.

Acetylcysteine

(mucomyst) liquifies/ dissolves mucous so it can be coughed out. Also known as an antidote for acetaminophen

6.

Benzonatate

(tessalon perles) cough suppressant reduces the urge to cough by numbing certain areas in the lungs

7.

Pseudoephedrine

(Sudafed): decongestant can treat stuffy nose and sinuses to the common cold. Sinusitis or other respiratory allergies

8.

Dextromethorphan

(Robitussin- “cough suppressant” temporarily relieves cough caused by common cold/ flu

9.

Guaifenesin

(Mucinex) “expectorant” clear mucous or phlegm from the chest when you have congestion from the cold/flu

10.

Theophylline

“methylxanthine” - treat airway obstruction caused by conditions such as asthma, CB emphysema

Low dose- anti-inflammatory

High dose - bronchodilator

There's a narrow distance between the range of effectivity and toxicity
