Introduction to Cells

Cell Organelle

tiny ORGAN LIKE structures inside a cell, such a the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplast.

Cell Membrane

thin, FLEXIBLE covering surrounding a cell; it allows substances to move into and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm

a clear, thick, JELLY LIKE substance between the cell membrane and the nucleus; it contains many organelles.

Prokaryotes

simple cells without a TRUE nucleus

Nucleus

the CONTROL center of the cell that regulates all activities, including reproduction.

Cell Wall

the strong, stiff OUTSIDE covering of PLANT cells that provides PROTECTION & SUPPORT to the cell.

Eukaryotes

complex cells that have an ORGANIZED nucleus.

Cell Theory

states that: (1) ALL living things are made of cells (2) cells COME from other cells (3) cells are the BASIC unit of life.

the English Scientist who coined the term CELLS.

Unicellular

an organism composed of as SINGLE cell.
