Instructions for Side by Side Printing
  1. Print the notecards
  2. Fold each page in half along the solid vertical line
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal dotted line
  4. Optional: Glue, tape or staple the ends of each notecard together
  1. Verify Front of pages is selected for Viewing and print the front of the notecards
  2. Select Back of pages for Viewing and print the back of the notecards
NOTE: Since the back of the pages are printed in reverse order (last page is printed first), keep the pages in the same order as they were after Step 1. Also, be sure to feed the pages in the same direction as you did in Step 1.
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal and vertical dotted line
To print: Ctrl+PPrint as a list

Lab Chapter 2: Scientific Method

front 1

If conducting an experiment based on this observation, which would not be a control?

I caught four fish at the seven o’clock in the morning but didn’t catch any at noon.

back 1

time of day fishing

front 2

What type of graph would be appropriate for this data set?

back 2

line

front 3

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

For the past two days the clouds have come out at p.m. and it has started raining at 3:15 p.m.

back 3

not testable

Weather is not a controllable factor, therefore, we can not conduct a controlled experiment with this changing factor.

front 4

Based on the information in Table 2, what patterns do you observe?

back 4

As more dissolved oxygen is found present in the water sample, it can be predicted that more fish will be present in the area where the water sample is taken.

As the amount of dissolved oxygen increases the fish population increases up until a certain point. Levels greater than 12 ppm see a slight decrease in the number of fish.

front 5

Which of these represents a possible control water quality vs. fish population?

back 5

All:

type of fish

water temperature

food

light

front 6

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

The salaries at Smithand Company are based on the number of sales and Billy makes 3,000 dollars more than Joe.

back 6

testable

An experiment can be conducted that tests the amount of sales and the resulting salaries.

front 7

Which represents the independent variable in the experiment in Exercise 1 testing the Water Quality vs. Fish Population?

back 7

dissolved oxygen concentration

front 8

Based on this data, which of these statements are supported?

back 8

The number of fish in the body of water increases along with dissolved oxygen up to about 12 ppm.

front 9

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

Ice cream melts faster on a warm summer day than on a cold winter day.

back 9

testable

front 10

Write a hypothesis based on this observation.

Ice cream melts faster on a warm summer day than on a cold winter day.

back 10

Hypothesis: Heat energy flows more quickly when there is a bigger gap between the temperature of the ice cream and the temperature of the air outside.

front 11

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

The teller at the bank with brown hair and brown eyes and is taller than the other tellers.

back 11

not testable

front 12

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

For the past two days the clouds have come out at p.m. and it has started raining at 3:15 p.m.

back 12

not testable

Weather is not a controllable factor, therefore, we can not conduct a controlled experiment with this changing factor.

front 13

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

The Italian restaurant across the street closes at 9 p.m. but the one two blocks away closes at 10 p.m.

back 13

not testable

front 14

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

Bob bought a new blue shirt with a golf club on the back for twenty dollars because he did not want to spend the forty dollars it costs for a blue shirt with a golf club on the front.

back 14

no testable

front 15

Which represents the dependent variable in the experiment in Exercise 1 testing the Water Quality vs. Fish Population?

back 15

number of fish

front 16

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

George did not sleep at all last night because he was up finishing his paper.

back 16

not testable

A test could be conducted to determine if George's sleep was inhibited by finishing his paper.

front 17

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

When a plant is placed on a window sill, it grows faster than when it is placed on a coffee table in the middle of the living room.

back 17

testable

Yes, you can create a controlled experiment using plants and differing the amount of light they receive.

front 18

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

I caught four fish at the seven o’clock in the morning but didn’t catch any at noon.

back 18

testable

You can create an experiment that tests the amount of fish caught at different times of the day.

front 19

Determine if this statement is testable or not testable.

The salaries at Smithand Company are based on the number of sales and Billy makes 3,000 dollars more than Joe.

back 19

testable

An experiment can be conducted that tests the amount of sales and the resulting salaries.
