Instructions for Side by Side Printing
  1. Print the notecards
  2. Fold each page in half along the solid vertical line
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal dotted line
  4. Optional: Glue, tape or staple the ends of each notecard together
  1. Verify Front of pages is selected for Viewing and print the front of the notecards
  2. Select Back of pages for Viewing and print the back of the notecards
NOTE: Since the back of the pages are printed in reverse order (last page is printed first), keep the pages in the same order as they were after Step 1. Also, be sure to feed the pages in the same direction as you did in Step 1.
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal and vertical dotted line
To print: Ctrl+PPrint as a list

20 notecards = 5 pages (4 cards per page)

Chapter 4 pre-test

front 1

You have isolated a cell w/a peptidoglycan cell wall. What other structure can you safely assume the cell has?

back 1

A plasma membrane.

front 2

You are observing a Gram stain of rectangular-shaped microorganisms that are linked in a chain & stain purple. How would you describe these bacteria using the correct terminology for the cell shape & arrangement?

back 2

Gram-positive streptobacilli.

front 3

A Gram stain of a wound reveals purple, spherical-shaped bacteria that divide & remain attach in grapelike clusters. These are referred to as ____.

back 3

Gram-positive staphylococci

front 4

Which of the following statements does NOT provide evidence for the endosymbiotic theory?

back 4

Prokaryotes contain peptidoglycan in their cell walls.

front 5

Which of the following statements about a gram-negative cell wall is FALSE?

back 5

It contains teichoic acid.

front 6

Which of the following processes uses membrane proteins that act as channels or carriers allowing ions or large molecules to move across the plasma membrane without using energy?

back 6

Facilitated diffusion.

front 7

Which of the following bacterial structures is necessary for chemotaxis?

back 7

Flagella.

front 8

Which of the following statements is true?

back 8

Endospores are extremely durable structures that can survive high temperatures.

front 9

Which one of the following pairs is correctly matched?

back 9

Golgi complex-->membrane formation & secretion of proteins.

front 10

Which of the following is NOT characteristic of the glycocalyx found in bacteria?

back 10

Creates a slimy, slippery coating that prevents bacteria form attaching to surfaces.

front 11

Which of the following eukaryotic cells do NOT contain a cell wall?

back 11

Animals

front 12

In prokaryotic cell, all of the following are functions of either the fimbriae or pili EXCEPT _______.

back 12

movement

front 13

Which of the following membrane transport mechanisms takes place in eukaryotic cells but NOT in prokaryotic cells?

back 13

Endocytosis.

front 14

Within the cytoplasm of bacterial cells are reserve deposits where certain nutrients accumulate. These are called _____.

back 14

inclusions

front 15

The nucleus of a eukaryotic cell differs from the nucleoid of a prokaryotic cell in all of the following ways EXCEPT which one?

back 15

The prokaryotic nucleoid contains DNA combined with histones. Histones are lacking in the eukaryotic nucleus.

front 16

Which of the following is true of bacteria that have atypical cell walls, such as those in the genus Mycoplasma?

back 16

Bacteria w/atypical cell walls are generally among the smallest bacteria that can reproduce outside a host cell.

front 17

Which of the following statements about ribosomes is FALSE?

back 17

Antibiotics that interfere w/protein synthesis harm both prokaryotic & eukaryotic ribosomes.

front 18

Which of the following is matched correctly?

back 18

Spheroplast--> gram-negative bacteria that are exposed to lysozyme but retain some of the outer membrane.

front 19

Spirochetes & spirilla are both spiral-shaped bacteria. However, they differ in that spirochtes have ________ & spirilla do not.

back 19

endoflagella (axial filaments)

front 20

Penicillin specifically interferes with peptidoglycan synthesis. Which of the following cells is most likely to be damaged by penicillin?

back 20

Gram-positive bacterial cells.
