Instructions for Side by Side Printing
  1. Print the notecards
  2. Fold each page in half along the solid vertical line
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal dotted line
  4. Optional: Glue, tape or staple the ends of each notecard together
  1. Verify Front of pages is selected for Viewing and print the front of the notecards
  2. Select Back of pages for Viewing and print the back of the notecards
NOTE: Since the back of the pages are printed in reverse order (last page is printed first), keep the pages in the same order as they were after Step 1. Also, be sure to feed the pages in the same direction as you did in Step 1.
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal and vertical dotted line
To print: Ctrl+PPrint as a list

9 notecards = 3 pages (4 cards per page)

Chapter 1: Themes of Biology

front 1

What are 7 properties of life?

back 1

order
response to environment
evolutionary adaptation
reproduction
regulation
energy processing
growth and development

front 2

What are the 7 themes of life?

back 2

emergent properties
interaction between organisms and with environment
necessity of energy transfer/transformation
form fits function
cell is the basic unit of life
life continues through DNA
feedback mechanisms regulate biological systems

front 3

What is genomics? What three developments make this possible?

back 3

genomics is the study of/analysis of the genome of an organism.

technological tools such as DNA sequencing
bioinformatics
interdisciplinary research

front 4

What are positive and negative feedback?

back 4

positive feedback- end product speeds up its own production
negative feedback- end product accumulation slows down production

front 5

What are the 8 taxonomic categories of life (in order from smallest to largest)?

back 5

species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, domain

front 6

What are the three domains?

back 6

bacteria, archaea and eukarya

front 7

What are the kingdoms?

back 7

animalia, plantae, protists and fungi- eukarya
bacteria, archaea- prokarya

front 8

Discern between plantae, fungi, animals and protists.

back 8

Plants produce their own food by photosynthesis.
Animals ingest food.
Fungi absorb dissolved nutrients from their surroundings(often from decomposition).
Protists are single celled.

front 9

What are the levels of the biological hierarchy in order from smallest to largest?

back 9

molecules(atom -->subatomic particles), organelles, cell, tissue, organ, organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, biosphere
