2.1.2 - compounds, formulae and equations

front 1

ionic bonding (2)

back 1

-occurs between nonmetal and metal

-electrons are transferred from the metal to the nonmetal forming full outer shells

front 2

binary compounds (3)

back 2

-contain only 2 elements e.g calcium chloride (CaCl2)

-put the metal first, change the ending of the second element to -ide

-Ionic lattice must be neutral so charges must be equal

front 3

polyatomic ions (3)

back 3

-contain more than one atom

NO3 - - nitrate, SO4 2- - sulphate, CO3 2- - carbonate, OH- - hydroxide, NH4 - - ammonium

ions from the halogens are called halide ions
