Spanish Vocabulary: Verbs - general information; ir + preposition

front 1

  1. What is the dictionary form of verbs called?
  2. In Spanish regular infinitive verbs end in what three forms?
  3. what is the part of the verb that remains when you remove the infinitive ending called?

back 1

  1. Infinitives
  2. -ar, -er, -ir
  3. verb stem

front 2

What is the double duty the verb ir does?

back 2

the verb ir does double duty: not only can it be used it to describe where you’re going, it can also use it to talk about what you’re going to do. To do this, we need to add the preposition a and an infinitive.

front 3

  1. ir + a describes
  2. ir + a + infinitive describes

back 3

  1. a destination
  2. future plans

The trick is to look for the infinitive verb. If it’s there, we’re talking about what we’re going to do, if it’s not, we’re talking about where we’re going.
