Sildenafil, Tadalafil, Vardenafil

Drug Class: Phosphodiesterase (PDE) Inhibitor

Method of Action: Blocks one or more of the five subtypes of the enzyme phosphodiesterase.

Used to Treat: COPD, Asthma, short-term cardiac failure treatment, inflammatory reduction, erectile dysfunction.

Nursing Consideration: Use by patients on Dialysis or hypertensive medication should be avoided.

Side Effects: Ventricular arrhythmias, hypotension, headaches, cutaneous flushing, nausea, diarrhea.

Normal Adult Dosage:

  • Tadalafil- Up to 5mg/Day PO
  • Sildenafil- Up to 20-25mg/3x Day PO
  • Vardenafil- Up to 20mg/Day PO

Elderly Dosage:

  • Tadalafil- Up to 5mg/Day PO
  • Sildenafil- Up to 5-10mg/Day PO
  • Vardenafil- Up to 5mg/Day PO

Pediatric Dosage:

*Not approved for anyone under the age of 18*

Pregnant/Lactating Dosage:

*Not prescribed or recommended for women pregnant or lactating.*

Patients on Nitroglycerin should not be prescribed this medication. It may cause severe hypotension and cardiovascular collapse.
