##### PACE - Grade 5 - Algebra - Chapter 13

5th grade, 6th grade

equation

a mathematical sentence that includes an "=" sign

expression

a group of mathematical symbols that represents a number, or can represent a number if values are assigned to variables in the expression - there is no equals sign

inequality

A number sentence with >, <, ≤ , ≥ , ≠ signs

function table

a table for organizing input and output data

coordinate grid

a grid formed from two number lines intersecting at right angles at their zero points

origin

the location (0,0) on a coordinate grid

function machine

a device that uses a number called the input, performs one or more operations on it, and produces a result called the output

distributive property

For any number a, b, and c: a(b + c) = ab + ac. For example 6 x (3 + 5) = (6 x 3) + (6 x 5) = 18 + 30 + 48.

Distributive property is also used as follows: 8 x 47 = 8 x (40 + 7) = 8 x 40) + (8 x 7) = 320 + 56 = 376

Solve:

1/4n = 15

n = 60

Solve:

n - 13 = -4

n = 9

Solve:

12n = 96

n = 8

variable

a symbol, usually a letter, that represents a number
