2

Phoria

  • (root word)
  • Tendency for eyes to turn from normal position resulting in binocular vision
  • Used with a prefix to indicate the direction of deviation
3

Diplopia

the seeing of one object as two

4

Tropia

definite/obvious turning of the eyes from normal position resulting in binocular vision

5

Emmetropia

the refractive condition of the normal eye, when the crystalline lens is at rest, the image of distant objects is brought to a focus on the retina

6

Anisometropia

a condition in which the refractive error of one eye significantly differs from that of the other; i.e. one is myopic, the other is hyperopic

7

Ametropia

  • refractive error in which light does not focus on the retina
  • includes hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism
8

Antemetropia

  • the refractive condition whereby the signs in each eye are opposite: one eye is hyperopic, the other is myopic

One eye is +

One eye is -

9

Aniseikonia

A condition in which the ocular image of an object as seen by one eye differs so much (eye / shape) from the other eye, the two images cannot be fused to see one

10

Amblyopia

Loss of vision without apparent disease of the eye (lazy eye)

11

Aphakia

Absence of crystalline lens in the eye

12

Scotoma

An area of partial or complete blindness surrounded by relatively normal visual field

13

Strabismus

Lines of sight of the two eyes are not directed towards the same fixation point
