Sea Stars

have a covering that prevents them from drying out during low tide

Live along shore line and tide pools.

Eats mussels and clams, have spiky skin to protect them

3

Mussels

attach to rocks along shoreline

Open their shells to get food and water at high tide

Close shells to keep water in during low tide, protects them from drying out.

4

Light Zone

off the shore and into the ocean

receives light from the sun

filled with living things, tiny plant like organisms that use the sun to make sugar, corals, fish, turtles, whales, dolphins, jellyfish, sharks, shrimp, squid

5

Dark Zone

Very Dark

Cold

High Pressure

Example: Viperfish, anglerfish, giant squid, lantern fish, gulper eel

6

Mussel Adaptations to live in Intertidal Zone

Sticky strings, attach to rocks

hard shells, close to keep water in and prevent them from drying out

7

Problem:

Garbage including plastic rings

Solution:

Stop dumping trash and littering

8

Problem:

Drifting fishing nets

Solution:

Stop using the drifting nets

9

Problem:

Eating sea turtle eggs

Solution:

protect the beaches

10

Problem:

Oil Spills

Solution:

Prevent spills and find better ways to clean up the spills

11

Problem:

Dumping of poisons

Solution:

Make laws against dumping poisons

12

Problem:

Divers damage coral

Solution:

do not allow divers to go near coral

make special diver trails

13

Problem:

Fishing boats scrape coral reefs

Solution:

Set up buoys to protect the corals from boats

14

Problem:

Poisons used to stun fish

Solution:

no using poisons

15

Food Chain in the Ocean

algae--> sea urchin---> crabs (gulls, fish, people)

16

Food Chain in the Ocean

phtyoplankton--->coral-->parrotfish--> eelss

Sea Cucumbers

Decomposers

feed off dead plants and animals on the bottom of ocean the ocean

18

Problem:

Overfishing

Solution:

Make government laws to limit amount of fishing

19

Crab Adaptations to live in the intertidal zone

have hard shells

hide in the rocks and sand

protects against changes in salinity

helps during tides and waves

20

Sea Star adaptations to live in the intertidal zone

spikes

suction cups on tube feet, helps them during tides and waves

coverings to protect them from drying out

Periwinkle adaptations to live in the inter tidal zone

shell

fleshy, sticky feet

helps protect them from the waves and tides
