Integumentary System

Structure: External covering of the body (skin)
Functions: waterproofs the body, cushions and protects deeper tissues from injury, excretes salts and urea, regulates body temp.

2

Skeletal System

Structure: bones, cartilage, joints, ligaments
Function: support the body, provide a framework that skeletal muscles use, allows movement by the muscles, protects the skull/brain, forms blood cells within the cavities of the skeleton, stores minerals

3

Muscular System

Structure: skeletal muscles
Function: contract or shorten (causes movement)

4

Nervous System

Structure: brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory receptors
Function: respond to irritants or stimuli from within or outside the body

5

Endocrine System

Structure: glands - pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, thymus
Function: glands secrete hormones (chemical messengers into the blood) hormones move away from the gland and to the appropriate recipient

6

Cardiovascular System

Structure: Heart and blood vessels
Function: uses blood as a transport medium for oxygen, hormones, and nutrients to and from cells

7

Lymphatic System

Structure: lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils
Function:
1. Lymphatic vessels return fluid leaked from the blood to the blood vessels --> keeps the blood continually circulating
2. Lymph nodes cleanse the blood and house the cells involved in immunity

8

Respiratory System

Structure: nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs (air sacs)
Function: keeps body supplied with oxygen, removes carbon dioxide

9

Digestive System

Structure: tube running from mouth to anus --> mouth, esophagus, stomach, small/large intestine, rectum
Function:
1. Break down food, deliver products to blood --> dispersed to body cells
2. Reclaim water
3. Eliminate waste

10

Urinary System

Structure: kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra
Function:
1. Dispose of nitrogen-containing wastes (Urea and Uric acid)
2. Maintain body water/salt balance
3. Regulate acid/base balance of blood

11

Reproductive System

Structure:
Male - testes, scrotum, penis, accessory glands, duct system
Female - ovary, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina
Function: produce offspring
