WEST NILE FLAVIVIRUS

*Worldwide*
Transmitted: Female Mosquitoes or Arthropod bite/Blood. Breast Milk
Replicates in Lymphatic Tissues
Usually Asymptomatic but can resembles the flu
Cause: Spleen/Kidney Infection, Neurological Damage- Encephalitis: Infection of brain/Meninges
(Inflames neurons, brain stem, spinal cord)
Symptoms: Muscle Weakness, Paralysis, Vision Loss, Speech probs

VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS: Intestines
(Oct-April during cooler months)
1)Rotavirus 2) Norovirus

"Cruise Ship Virus" (Groups-daycare, Cruise ships)
*Leading cause of infant death*
Caused by species: 1) Rotaviruses-G1 type 75% or cases, 2)Noroviruses (Norwalk-species)
BOTH : FECAL-ORAL/Spread by Fomites(Virus on surfaces). Norovirus can also be transmitted airborne.
SYMPTOMS: Severe dehydration and Diarrhea, Acidosis

SMALLPOX: Variola Virus

*Worldwide* Related to chickenpox
*CATEGORY A for bioterrorism
*Variola Major-Lethal Strain

*HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS until SCABS fall off

*DIRECT CONTACT/RESPIRATORY/SKIN/CONTAMINATED CLOTHS

*SYMPTOMS: Rash in mouth, tongue, skin-turn into sores-severe, fever, vomiting, head and body aches

*CAUSE: Scars, Fetal Loss, Blindness,
Viral Toxemia: Death
Small Pox Vaccine can be given
(There is a Stockpile of vaccine just incase)

*Vaccine given in past and *eradicated* small pox-almost completely eliminated

RUBELLA: Rubivirus

Causes German Measles "Little Red" - Red Rash
*Rare but Contagious
*RESPIRATORY: Direct Contact/Droplet
*Vaccine Available (MMR - measles, mumps, rubella)
Pregnant women cant get bc its a live virus
*Symptoms: Asymptomatic or fever, rash, swollen glands and testes, conjunctivitis, joint pain.
*CAUSE: fetal deformities, Deafness, Thyroid Disease, GH def, Heart Defects.
*No Treatment
