A KEYBOARD is used for typing or 'inputting' text or moving around the screen. This version is known as 'an ergonomic keyboard'.
A MOUSE is used for moving a cursor around the screen. Left-handed users can switch the buttons over if they wish.
External SPEAKERS play sounds more clearly than 'inbuilt' ones.
A JOYSTICK is used mainly for games to move around and select items on the screen.
A FLASHDRIVE or memory stick is used to save and take away work you have done on the computer. Modern flash-drives can stor huge amounts of data.
A SCANNER takes digital images or copies of work on paper. Modern software can then digitally recognise by OCR both text or with the right software even music scores.
An INK-JET PRINTER prints out on paper 'hard copy' of your work, Usually on A4 size of paper, sometimes A3, A5 or envelopes.
A DESKTOP MICROPHONE is often used to record your voice into the computer.
A WEBCAM is a small camera either mounted on or inbuilt into the computer
A SMALL VIDEO-CAMERA is useful for taking films or snapshots when you are away from home.
A MONITOR is the correct name for the screen at which you work.
A DIGITISER TABLET helps the user to draw directly to the screen.
A MOBILE PHONE - Some can be connected to a computer to download or upload music, voice recordings, photographs or documents.
An EXTERNAL DRIVE can be atteched to a computer to play DVDs or to copy files to a RW disk.
A PHOTO PRINTER uses special inks to produce photo-quality prints on glossy paper. This can be an expensive activity
A document camera or VISUALISER, is often used with an IWB (Interactive White Board) to demonstrate to a class. Can be used in a Science lesson, for instance, to enlarge very small objects for all to see.
A LASER PRINTER costs more money than an ordinary ink-jet printer but prints much faster and more economically. The 'ink' or 'toner' is also waterproof.
A NUMERIC KEYPAD is used for fast numeric data entry both for laptops and also for left-handers.
A WIDE FORMAT PRINTER OR PLOTTER is used commercially for producing large printouts eg for an architects' office.
HEADPHONES are very useful both for recording your speech and also for listening to music without disturbing all the neighbourhood!
