Describe the location in intracellular and extracellular fluids.

Extracellular fluid (ECF) all body fluid outside of cells. The remainder is called intracellular fluid-within the cells

2

Which makes up a higher proportion of body fluid, intracellular or extracellular?

intracellular 2/3 extracellular 1/3

3

How does the proportion of fluid in the body change with age?

infant-70% Adult male 60%/female-50%, Elderly 45%

4

Why does dehydration affect cell function?

if dehydration continues-will take first from extracellular, then eventually fluid is lost from the cells, impairing cell function. if it goes from cell the can't survive

5

What is the function of sodium ion in the body?

Sodium is the primary cation (positive ion) in extracellular fluids humans. These fluids, such as blood plasma and extracellular fluids in other tissues, bathe cells and carry out transport functions for nutrients and wastes. Na+ is important for maintenance of extracellular fluid, is also essential in the conduction of nerve impulses & muscle contraction.

6

Describe the effect of hypernatremia on extracellular fluid volume. On intracellular volume.
