Side Effects: Hyper/hypotension, tachycardia, ileus, EPS, seizures, psychosis, hyper/hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, cerebral edema, pseudoparkinsonismLife threatening: Agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, angioedema, bronchospasm, NMS
Nursing: watch for suicidal ideation, and alcoholism
haloperidol: Haldol Therapeutic: antipsychotics
Side Effects: NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME, hypersensitivity reactions. Siezures, blurred vision, dry eyes, constipation, dry mouth
Nursing: Monitor for development of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, respiratory distress, tachycardia, seizures, diaphoresis, hypertension or hypotension, pallor, tiredness, severe muscle stiffness, loss of bladder control). Watch liver function
quetiapine: SEROquel Therapeutic: antipsychotics, mood stabilizers
Indications: Schizophrenia. Depressive episodes with bipolar disorder. Acute manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder.
Side Effects: NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME, SEIZURES, dizziness STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME AGRANULOCYTOSIS,
Nursing Implications: assess for suicidal ideation/ tendencies. monitor for side effects.
Therapeutic: antipsychotics, mood stabilizers
Pharmacologic: serotonin-dopamine activity modulators (SDAM)
Indications: Schizophrenia Acute treatment of manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder
Side Effects: suicidal thoughts, AGRANULOCYTOSIS, HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS, NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME, confusion, impulse control disorder.
Nursing Implications: monitor for side effects, watch for suicidal ideation increased in minors
benztropine mesylate (Cogentin): anticholinergic
Therapeutic: antiparkinson agents
Indications: treatment for Parkinsons disease
side effects: dry eyes, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, confusion, drowsy, dizzy, hallucinations
nursing implications: PO - admin with food. teach about orthostatic hypotension
indications: anxiety disorder, status epilipticus
side effects: dizzy, drowsy, apnea, cardiac arrest, contraindicated with other CNS depressants
nursing implications: assess for CNS depression esp. in GERI and PEDS
diazepam: Pharmacologic: benzodiazepines
indications: antianxiety agents, anticonvulsants, sedative/hypnotics, skeletal muscle relaxants (centrally acting)
side effects: Conscious sedation (provides light anesthesia and anterograde amnesia

nursing implications: Discontinue use of MAO inhibitors for 14 days before fluoxetine therapy Assess for suicidal tendencies, especially during early therapy.
Therapeutic: antidepressants, antianxiety agents
Pharmacologic: selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
Indications: Major depressive, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, PMDD
side effects: NEUROLEPTIC MALIGNANT SYNDROME, SEIZURES, SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, emotional liabilty, worsening depression, chest pain and palp. tachy
nursing implications: Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors may result in serious, potentially fatal reactions assess for suicidal tendancies, assess for seretonin syndrome
bupropion antidepressants, smoking deterrents
indications: depression, seasonal affective disorder, smoking cessation, treatment of ADHD. increase sexual desire in women.
side effects: homicidal/suicidal thoughts/behaviors, seizures, insomnia, mania
nursing implications: No MAO inhibitors, assess mental status in all patients. watch closely in pts. with renal or hepatic impairment
indications: major depressions, insomnia, diabetic neuropathy, chronic pain syndromes
side effects: suicidal thoughts, dizzyness, fatigue, insomnia, hypotension, chest pain, arrhythmias
nursing implications: No MAO inhibitors, assess for suicidal tendencies, assess for seretonin syndrome, assess
lithium: mood stabilizers
Indications: Treatment of acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder
side effects: tremors, dry mouth, GI distress, drowsy, edema in hands and ankles (it is a salt), dehydration, seizures, serotonin syndrome
nursing implications: no caffeine or loop diuretics assess for suicidal ideation, watch for manic behavior. watch for lithium toxicity due to small therapeutic window 1-1.5.
carbamazepine Therapeutic: anticonvulsants, mood stabilizers
indications: Treatment of tonic-clonic, mixed, and complex-partial seizures Acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Unlabeled Use: Other forms of neurogenic pain.
side effects: suicidal thoughts, HEPATOTOXICITY, PANCREATITIS, ↑ liver enzymes,, DRUG REACTION WITH EOSINOPHILIA AND SYSTEMIC SYMPTOMS (DRESS), STEVENS-JOHNSON SYNDROME, TOXIC EPIDERMAL NECROLYSIS, AGRANULOCYTOSIS, APLASTIC ANEMIA, THROMBOCYTOPENIA, urinary retention
nursing implications: Monitor for signs and symptoms of DRESS syndrome and suicidal thoughts
