Chief constituent of connective tissue

Contracture

Formation of excessive scar tissue in skin, fascia, muscle, or a joint

(Common in burn patients)

Debridement

Removing dead, devitalized tissue from a wound to promote healing

Edema

Swelling, abnormal accumulation of fluid in an area

Extravasation

The escape of fluid from its physiologic contained space.

Example: Bile, blood, CSF that has moved into surrounding tissue

Exudate

Fluid with a high content of protein and cellular debris that has escaped from blood vessels and has been deposited in tissues or on tissue surfaces, usually as a result of inflammation

Gangrene

Decay or death of an organ or tissue caused by a lack of blood supply. It is a complication resulting from infectious or inflammatory processes

Granulation Tissue

Scar tissue formed by fibrous collagen to fill in the wound

Granuloma

Inflammatory lesion surrounding a foreign substance in a wound

Hematoma

Localized swelling filled with blood resulting from a break in a blood vessel, causes bruise or blood clot

Hemostasis

Controlling bleeding or hemorrhage

Ischemia

Decreased supply of oxygenated blood to a body part

(Signs can be summarized as the Six P’s: pain, pallor, pulseless, paresthesia, paralysis, and poikilothermia (inability to regulate core body temperature)

Tissue death

Serosanguinous

Blood tinged fluid

Seroma

A mass caused by the accumulation of serum within a tissue or organ

May be a complication of surgery
