A comparison of two things using like or as. For example: John ran like the wind. She was as pretty as a summer's day.

A comparison between two essentially non-like things. Metaphors do not use like. John is a clown. Sam is a wet blanket.

expressions used by a group of people that is only used by that group and is only understood through it's common use. EX. John is as dead as a door nail. Jimmy kicked the bucket. Shooting fish in barre....

symbolism

The use of an object, action, or idea to represent something other than itself. EX. the color white is symbolic of purity and of good. The color black is symbolic of evil.

When a non-human object is given human like qualities. EX. You could hear the house's creaky bones with every footstep.
