process vs content

has to do with attending

process- how the event happened (how the counselor and client will work with the problem)

content- what was the event/ what happened (story we're listening to, nature of the problem being brought to the counselor)

8

informed consent vs confidentiality

informed consent- the process of telling the client about the counseling processes, my credentials, etc. Giving the client all the necessary info about the counseling process so they can decide if they want to continue or not

confidentiality- about maintaining the privacy of a client (with some exceptions)

- these are both for the good and well being of the client

9

steps to reflection of feeling

  • Observe the emotion (thru listening, watching)
  • Recognize or name the emotion (kind of internal to the counselor: “oh, I think that’s sadness”)
  • Repeat this back to the client. Counselor is mirror to client’s experiences.
10

window of tolerance

there is a space in which a client is comfortable working. You want to work within that while also helping the client to broaden the borders of that window
