Role of Hypothalamus

Releases GnRH to stimulate pituitary gland

Role of Pituitary

Releases LH and FSH in response to stimulation from GnRH.

Role of Ovary

LH acts on Theca cells to create androgen precursors for estrogen. FSH acts on Granulosa cells to create androgen precursors for estradiol. These causes Ovary to release egg.

Ovarian estradiol

Creates the proliferative endometrium to prepare for fertilized egg implantation. Rising levels also cause mid-cycle LH surge which triggers ovulation.

Ovarian progesterone

Creates the secretory endometrium if no implantation and would nourish fetus if implantation. Post ovulation phase.

21 to 35 days
3 to 5 day duration
ALWAYS starts 14 days AFTER ovulation.
