1

Structure

the sequence of connections that defines a molecule, including the spatial orientation of these connections

2

Lewis Structure

Chemical structure represented by showing all the atoms and non-bonding electrons

3

Bond Line Structure

Chemical structures represented by leaving out the C's and H's

4

Ionic Bond

Strong interaction btw 2 atoms of opposite charge

5

Covalent Bond

Sharing of 2 electrons btw 2 atoms

6

Hydrogen Bond

Non-covalent interaction btw an H-bond donor and H-bond acceptor.

H-bond donors: O-H, H-N, S-H

H-bond acceptor: typically atoms w/a lone-pair of electrons

7

Functional Groups

"Business end" of molecule

very predictable behavior & properties

Larger molecules often comprised of several diff functional groups

8

Electronegativity

Increases from Left to Right across a row in the periodic table and decreases going down a column

The more electronegative atom pulls electrons toward itself giving it a partial negative charge and the other atom a partial positive charge

9

Formal Charge

= Group # in periodic table - electron count, where electron count = 1/2 (# of shared electrons) + # of unshared electron

10

Isomer

diff compounds that have the same molecular formula. can be either constitutional isomers (differ in connectivity) or stereoisomers (differ in arrangement of atom in space)
